No More Businesses On FB Newsfeed

Mark Zuckerberg announced today that Facebook Newsfeed is changing its algorithms to bring back the sense of community. The bold move is ditching the way businesses and videos crowd our newsfeed as we know it. Business posts will only show in the newsfeed if content is creating a good discussion. Basically, what is talked about by the people of Facebook will be shown and the rest is gone.

It’s potentially a big blow to businesses that have entirely focused on Facebook. Post reach, video watch time and referrals are expected to go down. But, it does make Facebook a far more rich platform for the user which you have to respect. Mark Zuckerberg wrote on Fecebook “I’m changing the goal I give our product teams from focusing on helping you find relevant content to helping you have more meaningful social interactions.” He also said that “protecting our community is more important than maximising our profits”, that I seriously respect.

The newsfeed, for me anyway has become a bit of a black hole. I don’t actually enjoy spending time on it anymore, yet I find myself sat there for long periods of time and what have I achieved? A few stupid videos and a reminder of everything I’ve tried to buy the last few days. Where are my friends? My family? That’s what Facebook was supposed to be all about.

Zuckerberg writes, “Now, I want to be clear: by making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down. But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable.” Facebook will prioritize “posts that inspire back-and-forth discussion in the comments and posts that you might want to share and react to . . Because space in News Feed is limited, showing more posts from friends and family and updates that spark conversation means we’ll show less public content, including videos and other posts from publishers or businesses.”

What do you think?
